We’ve all seen the ads for countless meal delivery services show up while we surf the web or scroll through Instagram, but which one is better? Well I set out to figure it out last month thanks to my curiosity, laziness in not wanting to fill my cart at the grocery store & urge to add new recipes to mine and David’s dinner repertoire. So is Blue Apron or Hello Fresh better? Which is a better bang for your buck? Keep reading to find out!
Now keep in mind that this is a vegetarian’s take on meal delivery. I’m not the typical vegetarian that loves vegetables & portobello mushrooms. My boyfriend is nice enough to eat mostly vegetarian with me (sometimes he throws in chicken if it makes sense), so the recipes we set out to judge needed to be filling and delicious for him too. We opted for Blue Apron the first week and Hello Fresh the second week, but I don’t think timing really had anything to do with my decision.
Meal Delivery Test #1: Blue Apron
The meals for our week included Crispy Gnocchi, Swiss Chard & Potato Shakshuka & Chirashi-Style Rice Bowls. We were so excited to open the package & the fixins for each of the different recipes were in cute, labeled brown paper bags. The rest of the ingredients were labeled as well!
The gnocchi was by far the most fun to make & the most delicious! Maybe it’s because carbs & cheese are my two favorite food groups. It was dressed in lemon & served on a bed of fontina cheese sauce with a roasted broccolini side. The meal was SO good & we will definitely be adding the recipe to our repertoire.
David was a huge fan of the shakshuka! It reminded him of his trip to Israel last summer & he said it was even better. We totally overcooked the eggs & should’ve taken K’s advice from when she made homemade shakshuka. Oh well! Now we really know what to do for next time.
I’m not a huge fan of Asian cuisine, but it was still super fun to make these rice bowls. I think the best part was mixing the tempura batter & then watching the mushrooms sizzle up in the pan. David loves Asian food so he finished the dish, but I wasn’t able to finish. I promise it was good – I’m just personally not a fan of the flavors involved!
Meal Delivery Test #2: Hello Fresh
Our meals for this week included a Crunchy Veggie and Lentil Salad, Garden Quesadillas & a Mediterranean Tomato and Asparagus Bake. I love that the ingredients for each recipe came in a separate box! It kept everything super organized & our fridge looked like it could’ve been in a magazine.
The crunchy veggie & lentil salad was my least favorite of the group. Even though I love feta & dill, it was a little too healthy of a dinner for me. It also wasn’t very filling! My favorite part was definitely the feta & dill stuffed pita – so yummy!
The garden quesadillas were so good & totally restaurant quality. This was also the first time we had ever made pico de gallo from scratch (shocking, I know!), so we added jalapeños since we’re addicted to spice. We added a bit more mayonnaise to our chipotle mayo mix to ensure that we’d have extra to use for dipping!
The Mediterranean asparagus & tomato bake with Israeli couscous was super fun to make, but when we sat down to eat it I was afraid that it’d be “too healthy” or boring like the crunchy veggie & lentil salad was. Boy, was I wrong! It was packed with flavor & one of my absolute favorites. David will probably add chicken next time too!
Blue Apron! As much as I love that the Hello Fresh ingredients for each recipe come in a separate box, it wasn’t enough to swing my vote. Overall, the Blue Apron meals were tastier & more filling.
Frankly, I’m a little bummed that neither Blue Apron or Hello Fresh give options for the vegetarian meal plan like they do the regular meal plan. I’d love the ability to choose 3 choices from 4-5 options. I don’t think paying $60/week is necessarily worth it, but I definitely encourage you guys to try both of these services out with a promo code (check YouTube for sponsored videos!). Three delicious meals for two at $30 ended up saving us money on groceries! Who knows, you might get hooked! We had so much fun making our meals that we will probably end up paying full price at least a few times this year, but I just couldn’t justify doing it every week.
Let me know which one you guys try first! Also, be sure to let us know in the comments if you’d like us to share our favorite recipes in another blog & if there are any vegetarian recipes you absolutely loved, please feel free to pass them along!
